To find out more about Donna - go to her web site: http://www.donnalynnthomas.com/. Many many years of experience and so much to show for it.
It was a pleasure to see her Dresdan plate, especially as that is our 2013 Challenge - thank heavens we will have cotton to work with and not the fabrics in use back in the 70's. What a time capsule trip.
If I understand the math correctly, you take diameter times 1.414, add 1/2", divide by so much, times it again and go to the 2nd power, find the square root and then toss the numbers up in the air and go find an old template. Okay, maybe that wasn't all correct - but remember the old templates where you made on bias strips and then cut out your template to get the stripes you wanted? (or something like that) With Donna's FLIP - take out the headache and toss in the wow factor.
One of the fun parts of the evening was when Donna would show us where in her quilts, the very simple square or rectangle that you use with her flip method was. No Way! Yep! Looks so confusing, but when Donna showed us the pieces that made up the block - astounding. But don't just believe me - LOOK at the quilts that follow and get one of her books, or take a workshop. So easy....
And it is easy - you just need the flip way........
Her Flannel Boards with the know how were great to visualize how to get from the beginning to the end result.
The quilt above is called Twizzle - and the picture below is one that Vevia made after taking a workshop last year with Donna in Manhattan. Color choice changes, but flip is the same.
Beware of shimmering leaves - no your eyes are not giving out on you.
Some patterns bring out even more possibilities when you add a few more blocks. Both of these below are from the same pattern - see the difference of 9 from 3 friendship stars.
Squares and rectangles are not the only thing you can flip with - try triangles. The best part is that with this method, you can match up your blocks. With regular strip type methods - you can't always do that.
Sorry if you could not make it last night - hope this brief trip through the evening gives you some idea of what our guild enjoyed. Thank you Donna for a lovely - wow type evening.
